Leaf anatomy. The blade has many layers that not only help the plant move but also help it store. Leaf tissues are composed of layers of plant cells. Underneath the barrier layers the leaf has special layers that enable it to process sunlight. The outer layers of the leaf are designed to protect it serving as a strong barrier.

The petiole mechanically links the leaf to the plant and provides the route for transfer of water and sugars to and from the leaf. Typically a leaf consists of a broad expanded blade the lamina attached to the plant stem by a stalklike petiole. These tissues include a mesophyll tissue layer that is sandwiched between two layers of epidermis.

Sometimes leaves are divided into two or more sections called leaflets. Parts of a leaf the main light collecting structure on a leaf is a large broad flat surface called the leaf blade. Different plant cell types form three main tissues found in leaves.

It consists of a flattened portion called the blade that is attached to the plant by a structure called the petiole. Leaves are however quite diverse in size shape and various other characteristics including the nature of the blade margin and the type of venation arrangement of veins.
