Extensor Tendon Hand Anatomy

Anatomy the extensor mechanism is one of the most complex structures in the hand 5a. The extrinsic extensor muscles of the hand are located in the back of the forearm and have long tendons connecting them to bones in the hand where they exert their action.

Extensor tendon hand anatomy. Understanding of and familiarity with the extensor anatomy of the hand and fingers by the radiologist is crucial for better assessment of pathologic conditions with mr imaging and optimization of this mo dality as a diagnostic tool. The band of tissue or retinaculum holds the tendons in place but allows them to slide up and down the arm. Extensor denotes their action which is to extend or open flat joints in the hand.

The sagittal bands attach volarly to the palmar plate of the mcp joint and dorsally to the extensor tendon. At the level of the mcp joint the extensor digitorum tendon is joined by the sagittal bands one of the main components of the extensor hood. They lie next to the bone on the back of the hands and fingers and straighten the wrist fingers and thumb figure 1.

They can be injured by a minor cut or jamming a finger which may cause the thin tendons to rip from their attachment to bone. If not treated it may be hard to straighten one or more joints. They are located on the posterior aspect of the wrist.

A common muscle belly is shared by all the fingers. Extrinsic denotes their location outside the hand. Each tunnel is lined internally by a synovial sheath and separated from one another by fibrous septa.

The extensor tendon compartments of the wrist are six tunnels which transmit the long extensor tendons from the forearm into the hand. Extensor tendons are just under the skin. These particular tendons allow you to straighten your fingers and thumb and can be injured by a simple cut or jammed finger.

The tendons travel down the forearm through a tough band of tissue on top of the wrist. The 6 extensor compartments of the wrist and intrinsic muscles of the hand comprise 23 musculotendinous units. Extensor digitorum communis tendons straighten the index middle ring and small fingers.

Zone i disruption of terminal extensor tendon distal to or at the dip joint of the fingers and ip joint of the thumb epl mallet finger. Extensor tendon injuries and tenosynovitis represent clinical situations in which knowledge of this anatomy is use. Thank you for rating.
