Lung Segmental Anatomy

Each lung is divided into lobes and each lobe is divided into segments. The upper lobes contains 3 segments the middle lobe lingula 2 and the lower lobes 5.

Lung segmental anatomy. Each lobe is supplied by a lobar bronchus. Bilaterally the upper lobes have apical posterior and anterior segments and the lower lobes superior apical and 4 basal segments anterior medial posterior and lateral. You should be familiar with this anatomy already.

The lingula on the left is part of the left upper lobe and is the equivalent. Thus the right lung has three lobes while the left has two. Each segment is supplied by its own bronchus which is called a segmental bronchus.

Boydens method of numbering the bronchi is extremely effective in correlating the segmental anatomy of the lung with what is seen in the roentgenogram of the chest especially when the bronchi are rendered opaque by contrast media.
