The large intestine starts from the ileocecal sphincter present at the end of the ileum. The large intestine is responsible for processing indigestible food material chyme after most nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine.

Most of the large intestine is located inside the abdominal cavity with the last portion residing within the pelvic cavity.
