Thyroid Anatomy
The thyroid gland or simply the thyroid is an endocrine gland in the neck consisting of two lobes connected by an isthmus. The thyroid is butterfly or h shaped and is composed of two lobes each with a superior and inferior pole connected by an isthmus.

The gland itself consists of two oblong lobes lying on either side of the trachea windpipe and connected by a narrow band of tissue called the isthmus.
Thyroid anatomy. The thyroid is a highly vascular brownish red gland located anteriorly in the lower neck extending from the level of the fifth cervical vertebra down to the first thoracic. Anatomy of the thyroid gland the thyroid arises from a downward outpouching of the floor of the pharynx and a persisting remnant of this migration is known as a thyroglossal duct. Calcitonin is released in response to a rise in blood calcium levels.
The gland varies from an h to a u shape and is formed by 2 elongated lateral lobes with superior and inferior poles connected by a median isthmus with an average height. Two types of hormones are produced which are the iodine containing hormones. Calcitonin plays a role in calcium homeostasis.
Additionally the levator glandulae thyroideae levator of the thyroid gland which is a fibromuscular structure also anchors the isthmus or pyramidal lobe to the hyoid bone. Each lobe measures approximately 4 cm in length. It is an endocrine gland divided into two lobes which are connected by an isthmus.
The thyroid gland lies in the neck in front of the upper part of the trachea. The parathyroid glands lie posteromedially and are sometimes intracapsular. A probe is placed on the skin of the neck and reflected sound waves can detect abnormal areas of thyroid tissue.
Posteromedially the gland is attached by the lateral thyroid ligaments to the cricoid cartilage. It has a shape a bit like a butterfly with the thyroid lobes forming the wings and the isthmus the body of the butterfly fig. The thyroid gland is located in the anterior neck spanning between the c5 and t1 vertebrae.
Tri iodothyroninet3 and thyroxine t4. Average weight is 25 g. Thyroid position in the neck in front of the trachea windpipethe thyroid is a gland that sits across the windpipe like a bow tie just below the adams apple.
It is found at the front of the neck below the adams apple. A small amount of radioactive iodine is given. The thyroid gland also secretes a hormone called calcitonin that is produced by the parafollicular cells also called c cells that stud the tissue between distinct follicles.
Thyroid hormones regulate the basal metabolic rate and are important in the regulation of growth of tissues particularly nervous tissue. It is said to have a butterfly shape.
