Temporal Bone Anatomy

Temporal bone divisions of the temporal bone. In evolutionary terms the temporal bone is derived from the fusion of many bones that are often separate in non human mammals.

The temporal bone is situated on the sides and the base of the cranium and lateral to the temporal lobe of the cerebrum.

Temporal bone anatomy. The temporal bone is one of the most important calvarial and skull base bones. The temporal bone provides structural support for the skull while protecting the cerebrum of the brain and surrounding membranes. The tympanic part lies anterior to the mastoid part and inferior to squamous part.

A number of muscles are attached to different features of the temporal bone. The squamosal bone which is homologous with the squama and forms the side. The tympanic part of the temporal bone lies inferiorly to the squamous.

The thick mastoid part forms the lower posterior portion of the bone. The temporal bone also articulates with the mandible at the temporomandibular joint. Its roughened surface provides attachment sites for muscles that move the head and control the swallowing process.

The zygomatic process arises from the lower part of the squama temporalis. In addition this bone surrounds the middle and inner portions of the ear. The squamous part is the anterior superior portion.

Its lower portion connects with the mandible or jawbone to allow the mouth to open and close. The temporal bone is one of the most important calvarial and skull base bones.
