Ovaries anatomy. The ovaries are female reproductive organs that are akin to the testes in men. The ovaries are part of the female reproductive system and are responsible for producing the female gametes or sex cells known as ova or eggs. They are paired organs located on either side of the uterus within the broad ligament below the uterine fallopian tubes.
The ovarian ligament extends from the medial side of an ovary to the uter ine wall and the broad ligament is a fold of the peri toneum that covers the ovaries. The ovaries are the female pelvic reproductive organs that house the ova and are also responsible for the production of sex hormones. The ovaries are uncovered in the peritoneal cavity but are tethered to the body wall via the suspensory ligament of the ovary which is a posterior extension of the broad ligament of the uterus.
Most ovarian cysts are benign and develop during a womans child bearing years however some larger cysts may cause problems such as bleeding and pain and require surgical removal. The ovaries are shaped like an almond and are grayish pink in color. These can also be termed as female gonads.
They also generate the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone. Ovaries are those female organs which are the homologous of testes in the male. They produce the ova eggs that when fertilized will develop into a fetus.
They are most commonly derived from ovarian follicles reaching approximately 2 25 cm. The ovaries are a pair of oval structures about 15 inches 4 cm long on either side of the uterus in the pelvic cavity fig. Ovarian cysts are fluid filled masses that may develop in the ovary.
Their work is to generate female gametes termed as oocytes mature ova. These ligaments help keep the ovaries in place. There are two ovaries each of which is located within the pelvic region beside the uterus womb.
