The ability to flex the fingers consists of a system of flexor muscles in the forearm and their tendons are inserted into the bones of the fingers.

Finger anatomy tendons. In the finger the ends of other tendons that start in the hand join with them to make the fingers move. The tendons that run down our fingers are held in place by a series of ligaments called pulleys that form stable arches over tendons forming a tunnel like sheath. They lie next to the bone on the back of the hands and fingers and straighten the wrist fingers and thumb figure 1.

The extensor digiti minimi straightens the small finger. If not treated it may be hard to straighten one or more joints. Extensor tendons are just under the skin.

4 figure 1 illustrates the basic anatomy of the finger including joints ligaments and tendons. A flexor tendon injury can cause loss of flexion. The most frequent distribution pattern includes a single extensor indicis tendon located ulnar to the extensor digitorum tendon of the index finger in the mcp joint a single thick extensor digitorum tendon for the middle finger a double extensor digitorum tendon for the ring finger no extensor digitorum tendon for the little finger and a double extensor digiti minimi tendon for the little finger.

The flexor digitorum profundus tendon is located under and splits the flexor digitorum superficialis tendon. When muscles contract they pull on the tendons to move the bones. It attaches to the base of the distal phalanx and flexes the dip.

They can be injured by a minor cut or jamming a finger which may cause the thin tendons to rip from their attachment to bone. The four tendons then continue along the back of the hand and onto each finger. Tendons are white flexible rope like cords at the ends of muscles that attach muscles to bone.
