Like all insects the outside of their body is covered with a hard armour this is called the exoskeleton. An ants body is divided into 3 main segments.

Another important part of the anatomy of ants are the jaws or mandibles. As insects ants have three body parts the head thorax and abdomen along with jointed legs and a pair of antennae. The ant stores food for itself in one stomach while the second stomach holds food which is shared with other ants.

They also have a hard exoskeleton which is made of a material that is similar to human fingernails. The exoskeleton helps to protect the ant especially because it is so small. The abdomen of the ant contains two stomachs.

The mandibles are dented and used to kill prey and enemies sawing materials and to get a good grip during transport. They have two large mandibles an upper lip covered up a pair of lower mandibles maxilla and a lower lip labium.
